History of Bir Billing!

The origins of Bir Billing trace back centuries, rooted in the spiritual and cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh. Bir was once a sleepy hamlet with agricultural roots, home to local tribes and early settlers. Its transformation began in the mid-20th century when Tibetan refugees, led by the third Neten Chokling Rinpoche, settled here after escaping Chinese occupation in Tibet. This led to the establishment of vibrant monasteries and the growth of a peaceful Tibetan colony. On the other hand, Billing was relatively untouched until the 1980s when its topography and thermals caught the attention of adventure sports enthusiasts. Gradually, paragliders discovered that Billing’s wind patterns and take-off conditions were ideal, turning it into a launchpad for what is now globally recognized as one of the world’s finest paragliding destinations. Over time, the pairing of spiritual Bir and adventurous Billing became iconic.
